That’s a picture of me in 1974, a senior in high school working as a part-time radio announcer at KRCO Prineville, Oregon. The opportunity seems not only better than cleaning toilets for the U.S. Forest Service as I had done before, but I didn’t mind playing records by Peggy Lee and Bert Kaemphert—really I didn’t. I did part-time radio stuff through college as well.
After getting a journalism degree at the University of Oregon, I decided I liked solving technical puzzles better than dressing up and playing news reporter so I worked in the Engineering Department at KTVZ in Bend for five years, repairing tape machines and maintaining transmitters on mountaintops.
From there, I moved to San Diego and designed technical audio audio systems at Pacific Recorders & Engineering for client ABC Radio at KLOS/KABC Los Angeles and KGO San Francisco, and many others. At Centro Corporation, we built sports trailers for NBC Sports in advance of the 1988 Olympics.
I married and began a more stable career at KFMB-TV CBS San Diego, where I joined a fun team that built and maintained their control rooms and all its equipment. We designed and built production and master control rooms from scratch. That was a great time.
When an opportunity to manage a similar team at Fox 6 down the street came up in 2004, I jumped at the chance. We learned together, upgraded some equipment, brought fiber transmission to our link to our Mexican master control room site, and evolved our IT infrastructure to modern standards. When we lost the Fox affiliation to another station, things took a turn and I left.
